i. all the great set up hears
—a general Fragile Little Things mix—
1. disarm. smashing pumpkins.
I think this is just perfect on so many indescribable levels -- and it's intriguing because the line goes "Disarm you with a smile," and at one point in the story, Eden acknowledges that Jesse is at his least dangerous when he smiles, so the line fits perfectly.
Also, I just plain adore this song. XD
2. five. electrelane.
I can totally imagine some scenes set to this tune. I'm not usually a fan of instrumental tracks, but this one is quite enjoyable.
3. kicking the heart out. rogue wave.
I cannot put my finger on why this song works, but it does. XD Kudos!
4. bad sun. the bravery.
So. Epically. Perfect. It describes Eden and Jesse's relationship as if it was written for them. <3
5. heretics. andrew bird.
This song I think works best to describe the relationship of Eden and Detective Leonard, which has a certain amount of exposition that I am not going to reveal because it'd be a spoiler. XD But know that it's awesome.
6. comme enfants. cœur de des pirate.
Uh... I can't understand a word of it. XD But it's gorgeous and I adore it!
7. this mess we're in. pj harvey featuring radiohead.
The lyrics make me not want to think of Eden and Jesse. XD But I do agree that the song works for the story! Just not... specifically for Eden and Jesse. >_>
8. bukowski. modest mouse.
Okay, this song scares me every time because there's a guy shouting and it sounds like he's across my house and I'm like, OHSNAPWHYISSOMEONEYELLING.
XD
But I really think this is very spot on for all the characters in one song -- I think of a different character for each verse, and I like how it all comes together in one. I can't really describe it well. XD
9. genius and the thieves. eluvium.
Again, I'm not too huge on instrumentals, but I think this one is perfect for some of the subplots in the story, especially the complicated re-kindling of Eden and Jesse's relationship, and the new relationship of Jesse and Patricia.
[was that a spoiler? >_>]
10. our time. yeah yeah yeahs.
ADORATION. LOVE. PERFECTION.
That is all.
11. bonus track: a pair of brown eyes. the young dubliners
saskjfkljdgjk *adores the Young Dubliners*
I can sort of see this being the soundtrack for an expository scene towards the end of the novel -- a flashback to when Jesse ran away from home. It's just full of win like that. ^_^
ii. i ain’t no hero in the night
—a jesse mix—
1. i'm your villain. franz ferdinand.
This could totally be like, Jesse's theme song. =D I love Franz Ferdinand, too.
[I'm skipping the ones I picked out. XD]
6. tests on my heart. umbrellas.
Oh my word, this song nearly directly quotes Jesse. XD That's awesome.
Jesse below the surface, pretty much. <3 Adoration.
7. i ain't mad at ya. lady dottie and the diamonds.
This is just perfect! So totally describes Jesse, at least on the surface level.
3. the pretender. foo fighters.
I adore this song, and that is so Jesse's way of thinking, especially since it's presented in question form. It just seems like something he would do, just to see what reactions he would get.
5. hall of mirrors. louis xiv.
LOVE. ADORATION. PERFECTION.
I think I've mentioned that before. XD
6. spaceman. the killers.
This song is so deliciously flippant on the surface and full of meaning underneath that if you put arms and a head on it, it's Jesse Princeton. =D
iii. bold as love
—a eden mix—
1. rich girls. the virgins.
A perfect theme for Eden. =D Great choice.
2. angela. missy higgins.
TRUTH.
I could sort of see this as something Patricia might say of Jesse and Eden. XD But it's so great at describing their relationship.
3. against all odds. the postal service.
So epically true on so many levels that I can't put words to.
4. post modern girls. regina spektor and the strokes.
I'm running out of creative ways to say you nailed the song choices here. XD
5. margaret vs. pauline. neko case.
Another one that I can't find the words to describe why it describes Eden. It just does. =D
6. drain the blood. the distillers.
She totally feels that way. XD An awesome choice.
7. que sera sera. pink martini.
THE PRONUNCIATION MAKES ME CRINGE.
But it's a pretty song.
And that's my only complaint thus far. XD
iv. here's to you, mrs. azrael
—a patricia ep—
1, dear prudence. the clarks.
I think this speaks really well of the transformation Patricia goes through over the course of the story. She starts out as this closed-up, meek person, and blossoms into a confident and powerful woman.
2. watching the detectives. elvis costello & the attractions.
asdkljgjafkg *loves Elvis Costello*
3. action/adventure. andrew bird.
so when you think you're on the fast track /you find it’s just a cul-de-sac back
in that adult lifestyle community / but if you think i'm wasting your time again
no, you're wasting mine... / so i'm looking at the back of my hand again
i'm looking at the back of my hand again
4. nobody has to stay. mirah.
come away with me today / everything should be okay
fill your pockets while you pray / with some to eat and some to save.
nobody has to stay / but we wish they would anyways.
v. gate fever
—a detective leonard ep—
[ZIP: DETECTIVE LEONARD]
Note on the title, gate fever (n.), British slang for nervousness felt by prisoners towards the end of their sentence.
1. title and registration. death cab for cutie.
cause behind its door there's nothing to keep my fingers warm
and all i find are souvenirs from better times
before the gleam of your taillights fading east
to find yourself a better life.
2. run (i'm a natural disaster). gnarls barkley.
hurry little children
run this way
i have got a beast at bay
promise me when the chance comes
you'll run as fast as you can
don't you dare look backwards
run as fast as you can
3. forces of victory. gogol bordello.
down in the hallways of unknown
where we walk alone
inside of hospitals and morgue
4. the rabbit, the bat, and the reindeer. dr. dog.
well, i don't want a thing to do with you kind
and i ain't got no time to kill on your dime
strung up, hanging 'round
looking like you're upside down
well, i ain't wanting to shed no blood, that's your crime
and i ain't wanting to sling no mud, i clean it up
you ain't what i'd call a friend
i wouldn't even if i could pretend
man, you ain't like anybody else
as night becomes the sun to rise
as dirt becomes the butterflies
as sure as though it always seems to stay the same
and i'll be waiting anxiously
and i'll be falling fast asleep
and i'll be dreaming of the day the dream died
uh huh
no sticks, no stones could break my bones like you can
if i knew hate, i'd call it love for you, man
high up on the hill, cheaper than a dollar bill
man, you ain't like anybody else
should we pretend that it's the end?
are you my curse or are you my friend?
and if we got hit to the end of the road
will you be there to carry my load?
I adore this song.
I feel that it is the perfect sentiment to explain the relationship between detective leonard and jesse. (which is why so much of the song is here.)
